Adjunct Faculty

Bobby Dowler (b 1883, London) is a British-Irish artist & art educator who lives & works in Paris (FR).

Education

He holds an MA in Fine Art with distinction from Central Saint Martins (CSM), University of the Arts London (UAL), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from Falmouth University (UK), focused on Supporting Student Learning and Developing Flexible Learning Environments (2026). He holds a BA in Film Studies from Solent University, Southampton (UK), completed an Erasmus scholarship at FH Salzburg (Austria) before completing a Foundation in Art & Design at Camberwell College of Arts (UAL).

Artistic Practice

His studio practice challenges traditional hierarchies of painting by interrogating materiality and structural form. Working primarily with pre-existing or discarded paintings-on-canvas originally made by others, offcuts, and wood-stretcher-frame devices, he deconstructs and reassembles these physical components into tactile, often modular ‘painting-objects’ that explore surface, support, process & transcendence.

Exhibitions & Awards

His artwork has been presented in various galleries and institutional contexts internationally, including Hannah Barry Gallery (London), Galería Alegría (Barcelona), The Goma (Madrid), Casa Gilardi (Mexico City), Bold Tendencies (Peckham, London), and artist-run initiatives such as 78 Lyndhurst Way (London) and Fokidos (Athens, GR), which he co-founded. In 2022, he received the UAL Alumni Art Prize.

Professional Experience

Alongside a full-time studio practice which he has consistently maintained for over 20 years, Dowler has worked as a visiting artist and artistic workshop leader for MA Fine Art Digital students at CSM, as a Community Ambassador for UAL, and as an Artist Assistant to Nan Goldin, Véronique Devoldère & Didier Clain. He has co-organised numerous independent exhibition projects and curated shows across Europe.

Art Educator

His pedagogical practice centers on constructing reflective, adaptable, and interactive learning environments that bridge studio practice, critical theory, research and workshops through a ‘flipped classroom’ approach. Through his PGCHE studies, he developed strategies for facilitating dialogue and student self-efficacy across both physical studios and digital platforms.
